Culture/Context entry of Catherine of Genoa + Chaitanya Mahaprabu

She lived in Genoa, Italy. She worked at a hospital where she administered and helped the sick. While working at the hospital, she wrote books about the hospital and her mystical experiences during that time frame. The world for her was where noble families played a big role in creating society. Her city was run by commerce and trade. Their social institutions were mainly churches and guilds. She did have a profession; she was the director of the hospital. During her century, water was limited but she had access to running water. She lived in a brick house. There is no evidence that she traveled and from what I found, she stayed in Genoa to focus on her job. The language that she spoke was Italian and Latin. She did go to school but there is not enough information on how far she got in her education. But she did write books, some of her books were: “Treatise on Purgatory” and “The Spiritual Doctrine of Saint Catherine of Genoa”. She did go to church because she was very religious. She did not have kids, but she was married to Giuliano Adorno.

He mainly lived in Navadvipa in Bengal. He was the founder of Gaudiya Vaishnavism. He also exposed the Hare Krishna mantra to people and Bhakti yoga. The world for him during that time there was a religious reform and a commotion of religions. Yes, his profession was being a devotional server. During Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, they did not have running water but would get their water from wells. Traditionally, people who are from Bengal live in brick and wood houses. He traveled often. His travel started when he was in school still learning. However, his travels switched to broaden his mission of devoting Lord Krishna. He spoke Bengali. He went to school and in time, he learned rhetoric and grammar. He would visit temples, but he mainly would join areas that would chant and devote instead of the typical rituals. Though he was married, he did not have kids. However, he had many people who viewed him as a leader and would view him as family.

One thing that i can conclude from these two considering the class theme is that they both partake in spiritual practices for much of their adulthood. The same thing about these two peoples is that they both were focused on helping spread their devotion to people in their society. They both were leaders to people in their hometown due to how inspirational they were. The difference between these two people is that Catherine of Genoa would use her devotion to God through working at the hospital because charity was a key for spiritual practices. While Chaitanya would chant in certain places to people.
